Cathy McQuaid, UKATA, EATA

Cathy McQuaid DPsych, TSTA (P), MSc (Psychotherapy), Dip Clinical Supervision, CTA (P), UKCP Registered, is a psychotherapist, trainer, supervisor and psychotherapy training consultant in the UK. Her first experience of qualitative research was whilst undertaking an MSc when she used Transactional Analysis and Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to analyse teenage women’s experience of a termination of pregnancy. Her findings were used to enhance the services available at a local young people’s sexual health clinic. Cathy’s interest in research developed after this and she formulated a number of ideas for different research projects. One of which was to explore trainees experience of TA psychotherapy training which she began in 2006 as part of a doctoral programme. Since completing this research in 2010 she has become ever more enthusiastic and passionate about the wealth of information, knowledge and indeed enjoyment that can be gained from research activities whether they are small single case study projects to larger scale projects involving a number of researchers. As a result of her doctoral research Cathy published her first book for prospective counsellors and psychotherapists What You Really Need To Know About Counselling and Psychotherapy Training: An Essential Guide with Routledge in 2014. Since completing her book she has continued researching the experiences of TA Psychotherapy trainees in the UK. Her focus is now on developing training for psychotherapy trainers. In addition to writing and researching Cathy offers research and training supervision and various CPD training courses and workshops as well as clinical supervision. She is the current Chair of the  United Kingdom Association for Transactional Analysis Training Standards Committee and is one of the EATA delegates representing the four UK TA organisations.
